| These heart shaped cushions are usually described as being sent from France during WW1 but I have seen an identical one, except that it has a Westmorland & Cumberland Yeomanry crest, at the C&W Yeo museum at Dalemain near Penrith which is identified as being sent from Ireland in the early 1920s, so perhaps the Border example may be from the 2nd Btn. in County Mayo c.1920?
I have no details of the origins of this item, except that it came from a Kendal charity shop.

A great item but I am just wondering why anyone would use a generic paper-based (or thin card) print over this nicely hand-crafted item. Seems to me to be a little crude, for want of a better word, to pin card or paper directly onto the material. I guess there is a certain amount of skill needed to stitch something like the Border Regiment badge with any degree of accuracy and by the look of it there is no room left to add this later addition to an already complete pincushion. |

| To be honest I think that these were just "churned out," and the card pinned to it for whatever regiment was around at the time. Sort of a "cottage industry" (bit like the fallacy that "trench art" was some bored "Tommy" in a trench. No, most of the decorated shell cases etc. were 1920s made by the French to sell to post WW1 battlefield tourists.)
I have, since my original posting, learnt that these "sweetheart cushions" were mainly from 1920s Ireland (e.g. 2nd Border Regiment) not WW1 France. Regards Paul |
