Instead of keeping items in drawers or boxes, here’s a cheap solution for anyone looking to display them attractively but in an inexpensive manner - go to charity shops!

What you are looking for are small recessed frames. These often contain tacky items like dried flowers, seashells etc., but the recessed depth of the frame is ideal for medals, badges, buttons etc. Take out these contents (give them to the kids maybe?) and put in a sheet of thin card. I find black, crimson or olive green colours are ideal for showing up brass or silver. To this you can mount the items, and add a concise caption typed on your computer in an appropriate font in a suitable colour, perhaps with a border. If you have a photograph, do not put the original in the frame, keep it in an album safe from the sunlight rays so it does not fade or deteriorate. Instead, scan the original and print out a copy of the photo which you can add to the frame (this way of course you can also enhance it in Photoshop, and resize it if necessary). Should this fade in time you can always replace it with another copy (perhaps do two to start with so you have a spare without having to remember what the filename was to reprint it in five years’ time or so!) I find that encapsulating photos in a clear sleeve seems to help reduce fading. It will not prevent it, but may slow it down.

If the frame is not an appropriate colour you can always paint it or use woodstain. Personally, I like to use a mahogany stain which I think enhances the appearance of brass etc. So this display below, containing two collar badges converted into broaches with a photo and description of the soldier who owned them, cost me £1.49 for the frame plus say another pound for the card, ink, paper, glue, and tape. Nice one Paul well done.

This is what I've done with my granda Albert's medals.

In memory of

This is definitely something I will consider doing with my slowly growing badges and buttons collection if I cannot find a suitable storage drawer (like Paul's).

Nice work! Thanks for the suggestions Paul, makes a big difference to the cost.
