When it was decided to send land forces to the Gallipoli Peninsula to support the Naval attack in the Dardanelles, the command of the expedition was placed in the hands of General Sir Ian Hamilton, an officer of great ability and wide experience, who had served as Chief of Staff to Lord Kitchener in the Boer War.
