Fellow Borderites,I know there are some football lovers here on the site so thought I would let you know of a match that men from the 1st Border played in at Frere, South Africa at 3pm on 25th December 1899 against 1st Battalion Inniskilling Fusiliers! The Border's won 2 nil!

In memory of
John Bardgett
(15309 L/Cpl.)

11th Border Regiment
Who died 1st July 1916.
Not into football but that's good news. I love hearing about the sportsmanship and games played between the men. Although a few years later, having read through a few war diaries, football matches were quite popular, however, the Borders did not win them all....unfortunately. A quick search (and there were many other results) showed these:
  • 7th Bn, 20th Jan 1916: Bttn played 10th Manchester Regt for Divisional Football Cup. Result: Manchesters 3 goals, Borders 2 goals.
  • 7th Bn, 21st Jan 1916: Bttn played 8th S Staffordshires for Brigade Football Prize (300 [?francs]) Result: Borders 3, Staffords 1.
  • 7th Bn, 27th Jan 1916: Bttn played 10th Sherwood Forresters for Bde Football prize. Result Borders 1 Sherwoods 3.
