| Maybe we all know of the KORBR in Northern Ireland, but five Border Regt. soldiers died in Ireland just before independence:
1919 Jul 13 - Pte T. B Davidson, Died Dublin. 3rd Border Reg (Yes, the 3rd! Ireland was not an "overseas" posting at that time) 1919 Dec 29 - Pte J.Heap, Shot by sentry in Co.Mayo. 2nd Border Reg 1920 Aug 10 - Major H F Chads. M.C. Died in an aircraft crash in Castlebar, Co. Mayo 1921 Mar 6 - Cpl C Bell. Ambush at Ballinrobe. 2nd Border 1922 Oct 10 - Cpl B Bishop. Suicide Dublin. 2nd Border I've also found an article from The Galway Observer of Saturday, July 24, 1920, entitled "Shots in Swinford." "A military patrol of the Border regiment from Claremorris was fired at on Saturday night at Swinford and two soldiers were severely wounded. The soldiers halted at Swinford courthouse, from which four streets branch and immediately shots were fired at them by unknown parties. The lorry was riddled in several places with several bullets. The military returned the fire, discharging as many as 500 rounds, with what result did not transpire. | After writing the original posting, I wondered, possibly the blank cause could have been "The Spanish Flu" pandemic in 1919, maybe the Davidson who died in Dublin? There are actually five entries, but maybe the list of four is just for ORs so the Border officer is not included (aircraft crash). I was thinking the other causes as being firearms for the ambush, accident for the shot by sentry, and the suicide self apparent.

| Hello All
We are currently doing research on the Clifden Marconi Station which operated from 1907-1923 The site was occupied during the war but we do not know which regiment(s) might have been there. Alcock & Brown landed at the site in June 1919 and we believe that the aeroplane may have been guarded by the 2nd Battalion of the Border Regiment which was based in Claremorris about 60 miles to the northeast. I would very much appreciate any information any of you might have regarding the 1914-19 period. Thank You |

| The only information I have is that which is contained in the above postings. However I do have this regimental Xmas card from Co. Mayo, which I guess must be 1919 – 1921, as the 2nd Btn moved to Aldershot 1n 1922.
Do you know where the photo of your soldier was taken? He certainly is wearing a Border Regt cap badge. Paul |

| I am very keen to know if this group knows more of the 2nd Bn during its time in Ireland. My wife's great-great uncle, Lt Col HM Meyler, was a lawyer prior to the WW1 and he served with the 1 Bn Borders and RFC.
All I know about is post war service was: "In Dec 1919, Hugh was appointed a Legal Officer in Ireland at the time of the troubles, undoubtedly risky work which was rewarded with a C.B.E. in January 1923. He was one of the officers selected for the prosecution of Sinn Feiners, and was constantly threatened with death." Very little information elsewhere, perhaps due to the nature of his work there?
