| The Border Regiment served in many theatres of war during WW1: France and Flanders, Italy, Macedonia, Gallipoli, Egypt and the North West Frontier. By the time of the armistice and the call for peace, the war came to a close at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. The Empire had suffered greatly in casualties and more than one million had died. Of this figure, the Border Regiment had lost over 13,000 dead and the Lonsdales almost 800; the regiment has been awarded with no less than 64 battle honours. Of the officers and other ranks within the battalion, five VC's have also been awarded. The following list shows formation dates and dates of service (where known). Those marked with bold text served in France and Flanders.
1st Battalion (Regular Army) served in France from March 1916 to November 1918. 2nd Battalion (Regular Army) served in France from 6th October 1914 to November 1917. 3rd Battalion (Reserve Regular Army); the battalion remained in the UK supplying drafts to the Regular Army Battalions overseas. 1/4th Cumberland & Westmorland Battalion (Territorial Force) 2/4th Cumberland & Westmorland Battalion (Territorial Force); the battalion was formed in Kendal in October 1914 3/4th Battalion (Territorial Force); the battalion was formed in March 1915 and remained in the UK supplying drafts to 1/4th and 2/4th battalions. 1/5th Cumberland Battalion (Territorial Force); served in France from 26th October 1914 to 11th November 1918. 2/5th Cumberland Battalion (Territorial Force) 3/5th Battalion (Territorial Force) 6th (Service) Battalion; the battalion was formed in Carlisle in August 1914 and was attached to the 33rd Brigade of the 11th Division; served in France from the 6th July 1916 to the 9th February 1918; battalion disbanded. 7th (Service) Battalion; the battalion was formed in Carlisle in September 1914 and was attached to the 51st Brigade of the 17th Division; served in France from the 15th July 1915 to 11th November 1918. 8th (Service) Battalion; the battalion was formed in Carlisle in September 1914 and was attached to the 75th Brigade of the 25th Division; served in France from the 27th September 1915 to 7th July 1918; battalion disbanded. 9th (Service) Battalion (Pioneers); the battalion was formed in September 1914 and was attached to the 66th Brigade of the 22nd Division; served in France from the 4th September 1915 to 29th October 1915. 10th (Reserve) Battalion; remained in the UK supplying drafts to the Service Battalions overseas. 11th (Service) Battalion (Lonsdale) was formed on the 17th September 1914 by the Early of Lonsdale and an Executive Committee. The battalion was taken over by the War Office on the 27th August 1915. The battalion was transferred to the 66th Division on the 13th May 1918 and later it was absorbed into the 1/5th Battalion. On the 31st July 1918 the battalion was disbanded. 12th (Reserve) Battalion; this battalion was formed from the Depot Coys of the 11th Battalion at Prees Heath and remained in the UK supplying drafts to the Lonsdales. 13th Battalion was formed at Lowestoft on the 1st June 1918 and less than three weeks later on the 18th was absorbed into the 11th Battalion Hampshire Regiment. |
