Quartered Safe Out Here, ISBN 0-00-710593-2, by George MacDonald Fraser who served as a 19 year old in Burma with the Border Regiment during 1945. Exactly how it was, death, destruction and non stop humour, fighting Jap, jungle and each other, the Cumberland characters jump out of the pages with their dialect. Outstanding book I can thoroughly recommend.

Nick beside me shooting and humming under his breath and remarking ye`re firin` low an` left Jock - thats it ... git that booger, he`s nobbut wounded! Eleven hundred Japanese died in that battle; but the official history doesn`t tell you how.
