I’ve sometimes wondered about who was the soldier who had the regimental number no “1” and “100” etc.

I have previously found number 10000 - CAVALIER, GEORGE ALFRED.Rank: Serjeant. Service No: 10000. Date of Death: 23/10/1914. Age: 21.Border Regiment 2nd Bn. Panel 35.YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL. Son of George and Ada Cavalier, of 9, Eleanor Rd., Bowes Park, New Southgate, London and number 2000 in the 5th Bn.- BARBOUR, S . Private. Service No: 2000 Died: 06/02/1916 . 5th Bn Border Regiment Grave Reference IV. B. 46. LIJSSENTHOEK MILITARY CEMETERY.

Well, I’ve now found someone with an easy number to remember: No. 12345 was PTE CHARLES BROWN 7th Bn the Border Regiment who was killed in action age 19 on 290715. He has no known grave and is commemorated in the Menin Gate. He was the son of Frederick and Mary Brown of 3, Albert Yard, Gilmour St., Maryport, Cumberland. The reason I found this is that his medals are currently on sale on ebay (8th July 2013) It includes some of his documents/ newspaper cuttings etc , so if you want to read them click the link below: (and, no, I’m not the vendor!)

Thanks Spike.

With a cigarette in mouth, the young Mr. Brown looks a little cavalier in this photo, or is that just me?
