Can anyone tell me where I would find muster rolls/service records etc. for the volunteer and militia bns just before the Boer war and also the years leading up to WW1? |

I don't know of a central source for muster rolls but there are early service records on findmypast, digitised from National Archives holdings. Ian |

Maybe try : http://www.armymuseums.org.uk
Locally (Cumbria) I think there are some old documents for Westmorland & Cumberland Yeomanry at the (small) W & C Yeomanry Museum in the base of the Pele Tower at Dalemain House near Penrith at the head of Ullswater, Cumbria: http://www.dalemain.com You could try the Cumbria County Archives Service at County Hall, Kendal, Tel: 01539 721000, who may have some details of Border Volunteers from Kendal & Appleby, but I haven't checked. Unfortunately, like Ian, I've never heard of a central source, Paul |

I just wondered if this book may be of any use to you? I think it was only about £5 but may be out of print, however I believe you can still order it on line from Waterstones:
Cheers, Paul. |
