He served in the [[6th (Service) Battalion Border Regiment|6th Border Regiment]] and a younger brother, [[James Garth, 15140 Pte.|James Garth]], served in the [[8th (Service) Battalion Border Regiment|8th Border Regiment]]. Before his enlistment he worked as a grinder at The Comb Mill in his home village of Milnthorpe.
