Line 1:
Images provide an important function, generally enhancing the text within an article. While many articles do not necessarily require an image to enhance the quality, there are a large number of articles that would benefit from some form of visual aid to the written text, namely, images of soldiers for the [[Lonsdale Battalion Roll of Honour]]'s remembrance pages. The Lonsdale Battalion Wiki is looking for copyright-free digital copies of images of anything relating to, primarily, the [[Lonsdale Battalion]] and secondly, the [[Border Regiment]]. The reason we ask for copyright-free images is that this removes the problem of displaying any such images in an open and public webspace. IfImages that fall into this category are usually in the public domain because the life of the copyright has expired or the owners of those images have released them under specific public domain and/or [https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ Share Alike] licenses, such as the one used for this site. However, if you are the owner of any such media relating to the Lonsdale Battalion and the Border Regiment we would be happy to hear from you.

Donating digital images to the Lonsdale Battalion Wiki is fairly straight forward. It comes down to two main options, these being a) create an account and upload it yourself using the [[Special:Upload|upload function]] and b) email the image/s to the [[User:Borderman|site administrator]]. It doesn't really get much more complicated than that. I will break these two options down further. It may look complicated with the following options available to you but after a couple of tries it will be like second nature. If you do encounter any problems you can always post any issues on the [[The Lonsdale Battalion:Administrator's noticeboard|administrator's noticeboard]] or [[Special:EmailUser/Borderman|email the administrator]] directly through this site.

===File destination===
[[File:File description options.jpg|thumb|right|An example of the file description options filled in]]
The file description box includes 'file destination' and 'summary,' which are optional, however, we would prefer that all image uploads are titled appropriately (relating to the image and not just a string of numbers and letters) and that there is at least a brief summary to describe what the image is. This helps when searching the site. The 'licensing' drop-down list is there to ensure that the image you upload comes under at least one of those licenseslicences. If you own the image and do not want it in the public domain, you can chose the 'works copyrighted' licenselicence. Conversely, if you don't mind others being able to use your image you could select any licenselicence from the 'Public domain' or 'Own work' list. Each licenselicence provides a different purpose and should be understood before choosing. As a general rule (but this is not exclusively so) anything over 70 years old can use the 'Work is in public domain because its copyright has expired' licenselicence.

Currently, these are the licenseslicences we use and are available in the drop-down list. Selecting a licenselicence withon the upload page will display a preview.

<u>Important! You must chose one of the above licenseslicences for every image you upload</u>.

===Upload options===

*<code><nowiki>[[File:your-file-name.jpg]]</nowiki></code>{{2nbsp}}→{{2nbsp}}to use the full version of the file
*<code><nowiki>[[File:your-file-name.png|200px|thumb|left|alt text]]</nowiki></code>{{2nbsp}}→{{2nbsp}}to use a 200 pixel wide rendition in a box in the left margin with "alt text" as your chosen description
*<code><nowiki>[[Media:your-file-name.ogg]]</nowiki></code>{{2nbsp}}→{{2nbsp}}for directly linking to the file without displaying the file

This is what the first image above looks like when it is not rendered: <code><nowiki>[[File:Upload file screen.jpg|thumb|right|300px|The standard MediaWiki upload file screen showing the basic options.]]</nowiki></code>

==Option B==
This is the option that doesn't involve uploading the images yourself. We recommend you try uploading the images yourself but if that is not your preferred option, emailing the images to the [[User:Borderman|site administrator]] is the next easiest thing. The administrator will assess the images for suitability and upload them on your behalf. You will need to let us know if you are the owner or not and where the images came from so we can include the correct license. Any additional information that best describes the images would be helpful.
