Accessed 2 May, 2020.</ref> He fell while leading a covering party in the attack on the enemy [[trench]]es on the Somme. The commanding officer, [[David Mathers (Lieutenant Colonel)|Lt-Col. Mathers]] described Will as "one of my very best junior officers, who has always done well in all circumstances."<ref name="ww1sa" /> He was very popular with all ranks. At his time of death he was serving with D Company, 6th Border Regiment.
