He attained the rank of [[Captain]] and was commissioned in the 15th South Lancashire Regiment. He died in the UK and is buried at {{CWGC link|id=42001|name=Battersea Rise Cemetery}}.</ref> / [[Wilfrid Vernon Matthews|Wilfrid Vernon Matthews (2nd Lieut.)]] <ref group="note">[[2nd Lieutenant]] [[Wilfrid Vernon Matthews|Matthews]] was awarded the {{wl|Mlitary Cross}} for his actions on [[5 September]] 1918.
