*All place names from SDGW are listed within their historical counties at the time of the war and may not represent present-day county and metropolitan boundaries.*§ A soldier's temporary attachment to and/or from other units (inc. battalions of the Border Regiment).*¥ A soldier's permanent transfer to and/or from other units (inc. battalions of the Border Regiment).*‡ A soldier's previous military unit/s before serving in the Lonsdale Battalion (inc. other battalions of the Border Regiment). |
Notes | |||
---|---|---|---|
*There is a typo in SDGW regarding place born. It incorrectly states Newcastle, Cumberland. In England there are three Newcastles: one in Tyne and Wear (historically part of Northumberland), one in Shropshire and another in Staffordshire. As to which Newcastle, it is unclear and it could be likely that the typo isn't the county but the town/village location itself.*John is also commemorated on a family grave in Dalston Road Cemetery, Carlisle. |

The administrator is in the process of updating all the Lonsdale (11th Battalion) Roll of Honour entries to the new style as seen here in this example. This is a lengthy process and when completed updates to the other Border Regiment Rolls of Honour will follow.
Do you know anything about this soldier? If so, we would like to ask for your help. (hover over for more details)
