Albert Garth was born in 1893 in Milnthorpe, Westmorland, one of twelve siblings. He served in the 6th Border Regiment and a younger brother, James Garth, served in the 8th Border Regiment. Before his enlistment he worked as a grinder at The Comb Mill in his home village of Milnthorpe.
