Help:How to upload media files

Help page

Photos provide an important function, especially for a website that uses them extensively for galleries and articles. While many articles do not necessarily require an image to enhance the quality, galleries are redundant without them. Where possible on The Lonsdale Battalion wiki we use photos to enhance both galleries and articles. If you encounter any issues with the upload process, please use the Reach out to us page.

Uploading your own photos here is fairly straight forward. You will need to create an account first. Once this is done the first step is to click on the upload file link, which is located in the menu to the left. You will now be on the upload page. The form has the following options:

The standard MediaWiki upload file screen showing the basic options

The source file

Choose the source file from your device. We ask that it isn't larger 30MB per file even though the maximum is 250MB. The following file types are preferred: jpeg, jpg and png. However, other file extensions are permitted. Whenever possible upload the file with the highest possible resolution.

The file description

The file description box includes file destination, summary and licensing, which are all mandatory.

  • File destination: File uploads should always be titled appropriately as this is the searchable title for your image. Use a descriptive and concise filename, e.g., Tank on the Somme Battlefield.jpg instead of IMG_0086273.jpg. The only way to change the title of the filename is to move the page.
  • Summary: This tells the viewer all about your file, so it is worth adding as much useful information as possible. The fields for this are discussed in more detail below.

Image details in summary box

{{Infobox file
 |description      =
 |source           =
 |catalogue_number = <!--optional-->
 |database_number  = <!--optional-->
 |author           =
 |date             =
 |published        =
 |permission       = <!--optional-->
 |part_of          = <!--optional-->
 |subject          = <!--optional-->
 |type             = <!--optional-->
}}

In the file description box, there is the summary field. This is the place to add details about the file you want to upload.

  • Description: Write a descriptive and concise caption of your image.
  • Source: Use "Own work" if you are the author. You can also link to an external site here.
  • Author: This is used for attribution purposes. Add the name of the person who created the work. If you do not know the author, put unknown.
  • Date: The creation date, or publication date if creation date is unknown.
  • Published: The name of the publisher.

Using a licence

Image files should ideally be in the Public Domain. We prefer to use the following {{PD-UK70}} licence, where works are classed as being in the public domain in countries where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or less. However, this may not always be the case. We are currently developing our licences so there are more options available.

This work has been identified, with reasonable enquiry, as being in the public domain in the United Kingdom.
This is because its term of copyright has expired. In the United Kingdom works fall into the public domain 70 years from the death of the author. If the author is unknown it falls into the public domain 70 years after it was created. This work is also in the public domain in countries where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or less. 70 years ago = 1954

Upload options section

There are two options. You can choose to watch the image page and ignore any warnings.

  • Watching a page means that it will be added to your watch list, which is accessible from your user area. A watch list is a list of pages you currently watch and if any changes are made to those pages you will be notified.
  • Ignoring warnings simply means you will ignore any warnings that pop up during the file upload process.

Click on upload

Once the above has been filled out, check you are happy with the information and click on the upload button. The file will then be uploaded. It will have its own page, which can be edited should you wish to add to or amend.

Alternative upload option

An alternative way to upload the file is to bypass the image details in the summary box. Everything else can be added after uploading your file; you can edit the page and copy/paste the blank image details (shown above) and fill them out then. This way you have the ability to preview your edit before saving.

After upload

Image files can now be added to pages (articles). For details, see how to add images to a page.
