James Garth, also known as Jim, was born in 1896 in Milnthorpre, Westmorland, one of twelve siblings. He served in the 8th Border Regiment and an older brother, Albert Garth, served in the 6th Border Regiment. Before his enlistment he worked as a Sawyer.
