Born in Stretford, Lancashire[1] Will won a scholarship at Worcester Cathedral King's School where he passed the chartered accountants examination and obtained his certificate A in the O.T.C.[2] He was articled in 1912, to Messrs. Ashworth, Mosley & Co.[2] In 1914 he enlisted into the 20th Battalion Royal Fusiliers,[3] a public schools battalion, and in January 1915 he was commissioned into the 13th Manchester Regiment.[4][5][6] His first active service was on the Suez Canal and in the desert. He was transferred from the Manchesters to the 6th Border Regiment, and went to France early in July.[2] He was killed in action on 14 September 1916.[7] He fell while leading a covering party in the attack on the enemy trenches on the Somme. The commanding officer, Lt-Col. Mathers described Will as "one of my very best junior officers, who has always done well in all circumstances."[2] He was very popular with all ranks. At his time of death he was serving with D Company, 6th Border Regiment. | |
