Guess pretty self-explanatory!. I bet not many such "invites" survive though! Check the image "dancing to commence at 8pm prompt"

Cheers, Paul.

In memory of
John Bardgett
(15309 L/Cpl.)

11th Border Regiment
Who died 1st July 1916.
A great little piece of history. It did make me crack a smile when I saw this. I can imagine what it must have been like to attend such a formal social gathering (from seeing things akin to this in film and television dramas etc.) I think I would find it interesting to say the least, if a little too formal for my tastes, but still something I'd have liked to have attended.

Yep regimental bullshine. I remember being in the officers mess in Omagh 1989 with all the regimental silver on the table and oil paintings etc (bit Like “ Carry on up the Khyber” with Sid James!). I was “practically dressed” the next day but was addressed by a cocky little “steward” the next morning by saying “Excuse me sir, but we do require formal wear in the mess”. I know this website does not allow profanities so I will edit my reply and say my response was along the lines of “Go away young man, I’m on a Derry patrol”.

This might sound very strange, but you will never guess - my overriding memory of Northern Ireland - I lanced my gum abscess with a bayonet - it worked!
Cheers Paul

I guess it's all about keeping up appearances, regardless of era.

Regarding your other point, not the best memory then of Northern Ireland but a great little story to tell to all those squeamish of unsavoury dental problems
