- 05 Aug - Appointed the position Secretary of State of War.
- 06 Aug - Plan to increase the ranks of the regular army with volunteers was approved by Parliament to an of increase of 500,000 men.
- 25 Aug - First Speech in Parliament.
- 09 Nov - Speech given at the Lord Mayor's Guildhall Banquet, responding to the toast "The Imperial Forces of the Crown." [1][2]
