| Just having had a chance to “play” for day on Ancestry I did a bit of a Wildcat search producing some interesting results for the 1911 census which also gave me a name link to the 1871 census and that ended up with a “roll call” for the 34th Regiment in 1871!
To begin with I just went to search census and I typed in for “Where lived”- “Carlisle”, then in “More – keywords” I just typed “Border Regiment”. ( I entered no names at all) Now you end up with some weird results doing this sort of thing ( e.g. someone who is lodging - a “ boarder” is read for “Border”) but there are some very interesting matches at the top of the 1911 census: Patrick Ganley aged19 Born Stockton on Tees. Address 10 Scott Street, Carlisle. Soldier Border Regiment. Single Richard Lewis aged 37 Born: Gatebeck Kendal.Address: 3 Cummings Court Botchergate . Lance Corporal Border Regiment . Married Percy John Willmott aged 37. Born London. Address: 3 Border Regiment 21 Peel St Newtown Carlisle. Colour Sergeant. Married Frederick Wm Custin aged 51. Born Woodford Essex.Address 104 Warwick Road, Carlisle. Captain Border Regiment . Married Robert Quseley Cuthbert Hume aged 43 4 months. Born Clifton, Bristol. Address: 80 Warwick St Carlisle. Major Border Regiment. Married George Jeffery aged 20. Born Lennex Town Stirlingshire. Address South John Street Carlisle.Soldier Border Regiment John Henry Jenkins aged 38.Born Crewe. Address 17 Clift St Carlisle. Retired Colour Sergeant Border Regiment, Married Henry Johnson aged 41. Born: Central Provinces, India. Address: 18 Castle Street, Carlisle. Colour Sergeant 3rd Border Regt George Stephens aged 36. Born Islington London. Address: 30 Barwise Nook Carlisle. Sergeant Border Regt. James Williams aged 75. Born Derbyshire. Address: 22 Monks Close Road, Carlisle. Married Ex soldier 34th Regiment! Now Williams came up with possible matches for other James Williams’, most were no good, but I found him on the 1871 census for the 34th Regt camp at Cheriton barracks, Kent. He was on page 9 of 37, so of course once you are on his page you can scroll backwards to the first page or forwards right up to the 37th page, thus viewing an entire 34th roll call at those barracks in 1871. I’m not going to copy them all as there 37 pages with about 100 names on each ( including wives and children) Here Williams' entry on page 9:
