Samuel was born in 1891. He lived at 12 Victoria Avenue Wigan and was formerly a [[Sergeant]] in the Church Lads Brigade of St. Michaels and All Angels Church in Swinley, Wigan. In the church there is a brass plaque to his memory donated by his parents. His parents were William and Elizabeth (Nee Horrocks) who married in 1878 at St George's Church in Wigan. Samuel was married to Ellen Martindale. He is remembered on the Helles Memorial, Wigan Cenataph in the Parish churchyard, and also on his parents gravestone in the churchyard of St. Wilfreds Parish Church in Standish.
