Helles Memorial

Helles Memorial is a prominent feature, located near Sedd el Bahr (Turkish: Seddülbahir) at the tip of the Gallipoli peninsula and the opening to the Dardanelles Strait. In the care of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the obelisk, which stands at 30 metres (98 feet) in height, commemorates 20,961 Commonwealth servicemen with no known grave who died during the Gallipoli campaigns of 1915–1916. The British and Indian forces commemorated on the memorial fought in operations throughout the peninsula. Thirty kilometres further north the Australian and New Zealand forces fought at Anzac Cove. Also commemorated are those who died or were buried at sea during the campaigns. The names of each casualty is listed on a series of panels that encompass the outer walls.

Visiting

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission state that this site is permanently open and may be visited at any time. They do advise that visitors to the site locate the memorial panel number in before travelling. The panel number can be found in the casualty records by following the link above to the Commission's website. The panel numbers (or panel range) shown in each entry relate to the panels dedicated to the Regiment the soldier served with. In some instances a soldier may have been attached to another regiment at the time he was killed. Where this is the case the casualty is recorded as attached to another Regiment, and his name may alternatively appear within their Regimental Panels instead. Please refer to the on-site Memorial Register Introduction to determine the alternative panel numbers if you do not find the name within the quoted Panels.
