Talk:The Landing at Suvla Bay (Poem)

Man I knew gave me a copy of this when I was 12 or 13

In 1964 I was a student at King's School Peterborough. The school was close to the town park, and a retired man ran the miniature golf course on weekends. We got talking. He had been in I think the Lincs. reg't. and one day brought in his medals in a tin, WW1 Trio. Also in the tin was this poem in pencil on small lined notepaper which he stated he had written.

He gave me the poem and told me never to lose it....which sadly I did some time before I joined The Scots Guards in 1970. He lived in King Street Peterborough, close to my great uncle, they knew each other.

I had no doubt that he had written it, as he was able to recite it word for word. His name was Bill Thompson and was born in 1888. Kevinmorgan2 (talk) 07:53, 11 November 2023 (GMT)Reply[reply]

Hi Kevin, interesting story. It is always great to connect someone to anonymous works. Such a shame the original poem is lost, that would have been superb framed, or in the safe keeping at a local museum. Do you know any more about Bill Thompson?
