Hi,

My Great Grandad shared a shell hole with Sgt Greenan just prior to it being hit again with another shell. My Gt Grandad notes in his diary that he had just left the shell hole when it was struck killing Sgt Greenan.

Samuel Martindale

Hi, regarding Sgt Samuel Martindale 11123 6th Battalion Border regiment. Earlier in the year I was fortunate to aquire from his family his 1914/15 star and war medal along with the original bestowal document from Fulwood Barracks. I am actively seeking his death plaque and victory medal. Samuel was from 12 Victoria Avenue Wigan and was formerly a Sergeant in the Church Lads Brigade of St. Michaels and all Angels church in Swinley Wigan . In the church is a brass plaque to his memory donated by his parents. He was married to Ellen Martindale and his parents were William and Elizabeth (Nee Horrocks) who were married in 1878 at St George's church Wigan. Sam was born in 1981. He is also remembered on the Helles Memorial, Wigan Cenataph in the Parish church yard, and also on his parents gravestone in the church yard of St Wilfreds parish church Standish. Hope this info is useful. Best regards, Tim Coote.

Tim, thanks for the information regarding Sgt. Samuel Martindale. Any new information is always appreciated to help maintain accuracy for our projects. I will make the additions on Sgt. Martindale's personal remembrance page soon. Where you mention his date of birth, I guess you mean 1891 and obviously not 1981? If you are able to obtain his death plaque I would certainly be interested to include an image of that and if you have a photo of Samuel, could we have a copy of that also? Thanks.
