User:Borderman/Reference syntax for using notes

Currently, there three main syntaxes for notes. These are used with the primary {{reflist}} template, however, it is the {{notes}} template that includes all three of the following options. They are built-in to the template, so any option can be used.

Adding notes in the body of text

It is easy to include notes in the main body of text by following a simple format. These are:

  • <ref group="note">This note adds the word note</ref> which renders as [note 1]
  • <ref group="n">This note abbreviates it to n</ref> which renders as [n 1]
  • <ref group="lower-alpha">This note renders letters of the alphabet</ref> which renders as [a] and this [b]

Adding syntax to render the notes

The {{notes}} template is added near the bottom of the page. You do not need to add a heading as this is also built-in to the template. All you need to include is {{notes}} where you want the notes to be rendered on the page. The lower-alpha option is preferred, and the reason for this is that it separates them from the references, which are numerical. This is how the above looks using the three different options:

Note rendering using "note"
  1. This note adds the word note
Note rendering using "n"
  1. This note abbreviates it to n
Note rendering using "lower-alpha"
  1. This note renders letters of the alphabet
  2. The more notes there are the more letters are rendered: a, b, c, d, e, f, etc.

So, when adding notes in the body of text, choose which style of note should be displayed and stick with it. Although all three styles have been used throughout the site, the lower-alpha style is still the preferred option.

Without the notes template

If you don't use the {{notes}} template, then you can add the syntax separately instead. You will still need to add the individual notes separately as shown in "Adding notes in the body of text", but to render the notes you can simply include any one of the following at the bottom of the page.

  • {{reflist|group=note}}
  • {{reflist|group=n}}
  • {{reflist|group=lower-alpha}}

Just remember which style you decided on and match accordingly; lower-alpha preferred!
