I have a book "Encyclopedia of Modern British Army Regiments" by P D Griffin which states the Border Regiment was formed in 1881 from the merger of the 34th (Cumberland) and 55th (Westmorland) regiments.

Amalgamation of 34th & 55th Regiments to become Border Regt 1881:

London Gazette page 3300 July 1 1881 listing 34th (Cumberland) to become 1st Border, and 55th (Westmoreland) to become 2nd Border (at bottom of the attached extract page, you may need to scroll down it). Note at that time it was still Westmoreland with a second "e" not Westmorland.

Hope this should answer question regarding the date Mike, For details of years 1881 - 1905 look at my posting in "The Early Years" section where on Feb 22nd 2012 I posted (in two parts owing to attachment space) under heading "Short History Border Regiment 1905" the relevant pages for the Border Regiment from an old book "Short Histories of the Territorial Regiments of the British Army" by R De M Rudolf 1905 (book long out of copyright) Click on the pages to enlarge and read text. As the regiment was only 25 years old when the book was written it would have been a “Short history" if he hadn’t included the 34th & 55th!

Of course the standard history book for the regiment is "Tried & Valiant - The Story of The Border Regiment 1702 -1959" by Douglas Sutherland pubished by Leo Cooper in 1972 ISBN no. 0 85052 042 8, which is usually available on e bay and certainly in second hand Cumbrian bookshops for about £10.
Regards, Paul.
