The '''Lonsdale Battalion Roll of Honour''' contains almost 850 [[other ranks]] and has been compiled using HMSO's ''[[Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914-19, Volume 39, The Border Regiment]]'' and the [[Commonwealth War Graves Commission]]. This was done primarily to ensure that the Roll was as accurate as possible and secondly, to make general comparisons between the two sources and route out the differences between them. There are instances where there is conflicting information: one source may say a soldier [[died of wounds]] and another would show he was [[killed in action]]. Discrepancies were not overly commonplace but there are a few, including some "strays" and various typos and misspelt names and places. It should also be noted that some words have not been misspelt, instead favouring the archaic spelling of words that were contemporary with the war. Any other errors and omissions are down to the compiling of this Roll of Honour. Many of the soldiers that served in the [[Lonsdale Battalion]] also served in other [[battalion]]s of the [[Border Regiment]], some also transferred from or to entirely different [[regiment]]s. This was done for consistency, to ensure that the Roll of Honour was as accurate as possible - with the exception of typos that occur from time to time. Compiling a complete list of Lonsdale men killed during the war was not without its problems or challenges. Many of the soldiers that served in the Lonsdale Battalion also served in other battalions of the Border Regiment, some even transferring from entirely different regiments. It should be noted that place names shown in brackets in the enlistment column denote the deceased soldier’s place of residence. Some instances show enlistment places in one town/county (or even country) and their place of residence in another. Additionally, there were several discrepancies between the HMSO book and the CWGC. These could be because of typos during the CWGC transcribing process, misspelled names at the time the Roll of Honour was first published by the War Office in 1921, and applicants may have intentionally (or unintentionally) misspelled his name at time of enlistment. Minor typos of place names that were noticed whilst compiling have been changed accordingly. However, soldiers names have been left exactly as printed. |

This roll has been broken down into smaller component parts to aid quicker browsing. To find a soldier's remembrance page, select a letter below to view a table of all the soldiers surnames starting with that letter. You can then click a soldier's name to view his remembrance page. Please note this project started September 2016. Creating a remembrance page for each soldier is a lengthy process and will take some time to complete. |

The Lonsdale Battalion Roll of Honour contains almost 850 other ranks and has been compiled using HMSO's Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914-19, Volume 39, The Border Regiment and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. This was done primarily to ensure that the Roll was as accurate as possible and secondly, to make general comparisons between the two sources and route out the differences between them.
