WON A FOOTBALL COMPETITION

And Expects Medals
Private James H. Shuttleworth, 11th Border, writing on 22 April, says:
Dear Star Man,
I received the parcel so kindly forwarded by you on the 14th, for which many thanks. Please give my thanks and best wishes to the Old Side workmen. We have been out of the trenches over a fortnight now, and have had a football competition between Platoons. I am pleased to say my Platoon won it. We hope to get medals, and it we do they will make a grand souvenir of our football hours in Sunny France. We start another competition tonight. We are to meet C Company, and if we win, as I hope we do, we meet B Company in the final.
I had to leave this letter for work, so am rather late getting it away. Pleased to say we beat C Company by one goal to nothing, after extra time. Will close now with best wishes to yourself and the old town, and the best of luck to the “Star”.—Workington Star and Harrington Guardian, Published 12 May 1916.
