The 5th Border Regiment finds its roots from the Cumberland Volunteers when it was converted from the 3rd (Cumberland) Volunteer Battalion on 1 April 1908[1] only to be renamed a year later in 1909 the 5th (Cumberland) Battalion The Border Regiment.[1]
First World War (1914-1918)
With the onset of the First World War, the Battalion was mobilised on 4 August 1914 and on 15 March 1915 it was converted to the 1/5th Border Regiment.[1] As a result of this conversion and subsequent division, the 5th Border Regiment refers to three individuals battalions of the (Cumberland) Territorial Force:
Interwar Years
The Battalion was again reformed as the 5th (Cumberland) Border Regiment on 7 February 1920.[1]
Second World War (1939-1945)
With the onset of the Second World war, the Battalion was mobilised on 1 September 1939 and remained active until it was converted to the 110th Regiment RAC on 1 November 1941.[1]
Casualties of the 5th Battalion (Roll of Honour)
Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914-19, Volume 39, The Border Regiment does not differentiate between the three battalions of the Cumberland Territorial Force. A soldier from the 2/5th Battalion is listed as serving in the 5th Battalion. As a result of this, casualties of the 1/5th, 2/5th and 3/5th Battalions have been combined into one Roll of Honour.
