1914 (Sunday)
- Lt-Col. Machell to Lord Lonsdale: "....you thought you could lend me a useful animal [a horse] for Parade....I should much like him this week – we contemplate a march round Carlisle on Saturday, the hiring day....Total strength yesterday 814." [1]
1915 (Monday)
- Letter from W. Monkhouse at Blackhall Camp: "Recruiting for the Lonsdales is still very bad the Border Regiment getting about ten men to each one we get. I am afraid that we will find without an office of our own in town the Borders will have a big pull over us. Although Major Fuller promised to help us all he could, men going to Devonshire St. & wishing to join a Border Regmt are not persuaded to join the Lonsdales the same as they would be coming to our office. The Lonsdale Bn is also out of favour at present as the 11th is still in England & I think we might do much better if we could advertise that 1000 men were required for the 12th Border Regmt and open up an office under that title ... The men here have worked hard to get recruits."
1916 (Wednesday)
- Battalion situated at La Vicogne involved in general parades of instruction under Commanding Officer.
1917 (Thursday)
- Battalion situated in the Roubrouck Area involved in Company training.

Various sources contemporary to the war have been used to compile The Lonsdale Battalion On This Day. The majority of the events shown on this day (1 November), including any supplementary notes, enlistments and statistical data etc., have been primarily sourced from the Lonsdale Battalion War Diary (November 1915 to June 1918), Record of the XIth (Service) Battalion (Lonsdale) and abridged material from Timeline and Chronology of the Lonsdale Battalion (September 1914 - May 1915), which are sourced from the original DLONS/L/13/13 Lowther Estate Archives. Events from that chronology are reproduced here with kind permission of Jim Lowther (2016). They are identified and referenced separately by their unique DLONS numbers. Please do not publish these events without prior permission from the Lowther Estate. All casualty names, numbers, ranks, date of deaths and places of burial/commemoration have been sourced from Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914-19, Volume 39, The Border Regiment and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database respectively.
