Events preceding British Declaration of War

  • Kiel Canal reopened (owing to its having been deepened) by the Kaiser. Visit of the British Fleet under Sir G. Warrender. Kaiser inspects the Dreadnought HMS King George V.

1915

1916

  • Template:WF - Battle of Verdun: Heavy fighting at Fleury and west of Thiaumont. Preliminary British bombardment along Somme front and northwards.
  • Template:EF - Russian advance from Bukovina; fighting on Dniester.
  • Template:SF - Great Italian advance from Brenta to the Adige. Asiago retaken.
  • Template:PO - Roger Casement trial begins.

1917

  • Template:WF - British advance on Souchez river continues. French carry crest near Hurtebise ("Drangon's Cave"). First fighting contingent of American troops lands in France.
  • Template:SF - Austrian counter-attackson Mt. Ortigara.
  • Template:NO - Raid in Black Sea by SMS Breslau; Russian wireless station and lighthouse on island of Fidonisi destroyed.
  • Template:PO - M. Venizelos returns to Athens and succeeds M. Zaimis as Premier. Recall of German Minister to Norway, consequent or bomb-plot.

1918

  • Template:WF - American success near Belleau Wood. British air attacks on Saabrücken, Offenburg (13 miles south east of Strassburg) and Karlsruhe.
  • Template:EF - M. Markiewicz (Socialist) forms cabinet in Ukraine, vice M. Lyshub resigns.
  • Template:SF - Italians take bridge-head of Capo Sile.
  • Template:PO - Speech of Chief Secretary for Ireland in House of Commons.[1]

1919

  • Post Armistice: Bolsheviks 20 Miles from Perm, and advancing east of Ufa.

Speech of Mr. Shortt (Irish Secretary) re Irish situation: (1) Two sources of Information re German plot: (a) inside Ireland, from literature and posters; (b) outside Ireland, information that Germany in spring was trying to get in touch with Ireland. German agent landed in West Ireland 12 April. Two German submarines off west coast, where destruction of shipping impossible. (2) Justification of Government policy. Voluntary recruiting proclamation essential before conscription; Recruiting Council set up. Propaganda for Ireland being attended to.
