1914

Events preceding British Declaration of War

  • Austria-Hungary: Council of Ministers, including Ministers for Foreign Affairs and War, Chief of General Staff and Naval Commander-in-Chief: Council lasts from 11.30 a.m. to 6.15 p.m.

1915

1916

  • Template:WF - British again advance; portion of Leipzig Redoubt carried on Thiepval Plateau. Fighting at Ovillers and east of La Boiselle. Contalmaison won but not held.
  • Template:EF - Russians reach Manevichi station on Kovel-Sarni railway in northern Lutsk salient.
  • Template:SF - Italians continue advance between Brenta and Adige; they carry two enemy positions north of Asiago.
  • Template:NO - In East Africa General Smuts occupies Tanga, the terminus of Usambara railway.
  • Template:PO - Congratulatory message to troops from King George.

1917

  • Template:WF - French gain ground at Cerny (northern Aisne) and at Verdun. Big German aeroplane raid on London, 57 killed, 193 injured; 11 enemy aeroplanes accounted for. British aeroplanes bomb Ghistelles (Belgium).
  • Ae –  - Despatches on winter operations in Egypt published.[2]
  • Template:PO - French Government affirm their right of control in respect of army services. Chinese Emperor abdicates.

1918

  • Template:WF - Australian advance continued on each side of River Somme. German air-raid on ambulance park at La Panne (village behind Yser): 43 girls killed.
  • Template:EF - Czecho-Slovaks defeat Bolsheviks near Chita (east of Irkutsk).
  • Template:SF - Italians attack on Middle and Lower Vojusa (southern Albania).
  • Template:PO - Agreement between Great Britain, USA, France and Murman Council re Allied help.

1919

  • Peace Treaty ratified by the German Government.

  1. Sir Ian Hamilton after explaining the difficulties of the situation, describes the attempt by battleships to force the Narrows on 18 March, and the military landing on 25 April. He gives a detailed account of the fighting (paying tribute to the gallantry of all troops concerned, the attempt to capture Krithia, Achi Baba, and the Turkish methods of attack.
  2. The despatches cover the operations in Egypt from 1 October, 1916, to 28 February, 1917, during which period Sinai was cleared of the Turks and the Egyptian force won the victories of Maghdaba and Rafa'a, and on the Western Front the Senussi were defeated were defeated near Siwa.
