Copy memo. of Major Binning: “It has been suggested that an album of photos of the Lonsdale Battalion for sale in a cheap form, would be of considerable assistance to recruiting.^[1]
Regarding bathing: “As long as the Battalion remains at Carlisle, companies will attend Baths as usual.^[2]

1916 (Sunday)

Senlis: Situated in billets involved in training.

1917 (Monday)

Holnon: Remains in support to two battalions in the front line.
One Company provides immediate support to the 17th Highland Light Infantry.
Work is done on shelters.
Deaths: William Walker Inman (24707 L/Cpl.).

1918 (Tuesday)

In the Line: Enemy patrol outside Lonsdales' position at 6am and fired on. Party retires but comes again, giving themselves up. 10th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders take seven prisoners; Lonsdales take four.
Hostile artillery is active on Cojeul Valley.
Battalion Headquarters is moved into a new dugout.
Deaths: James Kelly (28946 Pte.) is killed in action.

The majority of the events shown on this day (9 April), including any supplementary notes, enlistments and statistical data etc., have been primarily sourced from the Lonsdale Battalion War Diary (November 1915 to June 1918), Record of the XIth (Service) Battalion (Lonsdale) and abridged material from Timeline and Chronology of the Lonsdale Battalion (September 1914 - May 1915), which are sourced from the original DLONS/L/13/13 Lowther Estate Archives. Events from that chronology are reproduced here with kind permission of Jim Lowther (2016). They are identified and referenced separately by their unique DLONS numbers. Please do not publish these events without prior permission from the Lowther Estate.
