What's in this compendium?

This compendium is a collection of words and knowledge relative to the specific analysis of the Lonsdale Battalion and the wider Border Regiment, predominantly in connection with their actions and the places they were known to have been stationed or fought during the 1914-1918 period. Other words relating to general phrases may be included if there is a connection. Much of this information has come from primary sources including, but not limited to, the Lonsdale records and the Border Regiment War Diaries. As our various projects continue, further words will be added to expand and improve this resource.

Sub-categories provide specific areas of knowledge; these are still contained within the overarching scope of the compendium. As a result of this, entries could contain just one, or even several categories. This is still experimental and may be subject to change.

What's not this compendium?

Subjects with no connection to either the Lonsdale Battalion or the Border Regiment will not be included. General information pertaining to the Great War will be kept separate on our sister project at The Great War. For a comprehensive listing of words and phrases of the Armed Forces of Great Britain during the Great War, see Glossary of words and phrases. There you find slang of the trenches and the Air Force; British and American service terms, including expressions in everyday use; and warfare in general. These words and phrases are contemporary with the war, which is reflected in the language used, some of which may seem derogatory by today's standards. Key figures during the war and the many places across all fronts involved in political and military battles are listed in the The Great War Index.

Please feel free to expand upon and improve either of these projects.
