Name C. Clarke
Rank Acting Sergeant
Number 9429
Other details Attached Wiltshire Regiment (Carlisle)
Date published 3 October 1918
Citation For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as acting RSM. He worked untiringly in getting ammunition to companies during very heavy fighting. Later, when battalion headquarters was surrounded and all the officers killed or wounded, he made a courageous stand, and was the last man to leave, after which he did excellent work in rallying men of other regiments and in taking up another position of defence. His tenacity and leadership were most marked throughout the day.
