Citation For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when his company, having been ordered to counter-attack, he volunteered to go forward and ascertain the position of the enemy in company with an officer and another man, but his party was bombed back. Later, he went out with another officer and a corporal. This time they bombed the enemy out of the trench, enabling the company to occupy it without further fighting.
