Citation For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a surprise night attack by the enemy. He did fine work in rallying men who were retiring by his calm and brave example. On another occasion he volunteered and successfully carried back a message over some three hundred yards of open ground, and at once returned to his company.
