The following text is a Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) transcription of a Border Regiment soldier of the First World War.

Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and ability on the 16th May 1915, at Festubert. Some men were in a captured first line without a leader, and Serjeant Toner, although not belonging to the company, ran forward under fire, took command, and led, with great courage and coolness, a further advance.
