Citation For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at Salines on the 15th October 1918. During the attack an enemy trench mortar with crew of ten men opened fire, causing casualties and hindering the advance. He and four men at once volunteered and attacked it, killing and wounding five and capturing the remaining five. By his fine leadership and disregard of danger he saved many lives and materially assisted the advance.
