1916

  • "Private John Bardgett Missing: Mrs Bardgett, Chapel Street, Appleby, has been notified that her Husband John Bardgett of the Border Regiment has been missing since July 1st. Before the war he was employed on the Midland Railway." [1]

1917

  • Battalion situated in the line experiences some troublesome 'Minnies'[2] on Left Company Front.[3]
  • 2nd Lieut. A. Armer and three other ranks are killed.[3]

  2. "Minnies" is a slang term used by the Allied forces for a class of short range mortar called a Minenwerfer (mine launcher) used extensively during the First World War.
