1914

  • Telegram to Lt-Col. Machell: Have four single excellent fellows here [Workington] waiting regret to miss them can you possibly admit. Lt-Col. Machell replies with: Enlist these four if specially good but can take more bearing in mind men expected from you Monday. [1]
  • Telegram Lt-Col. Machell to the press: Lonsdale Battalion strength now 1000 recruiting for this Battalion closed for the present. [2]
  • Memo: Please give orders that, in order to ensure proper supply of biscuits at early morning tea, which until further order will be served at 6.45 a.m., Company Orderly Corporals will take over biscuits for the number of men in mess in their respective Companies from the Contractor’s store at 6.40 a.m. & will be responsible for proper issue. [3]
  • Lt-Col. Machell’s draft letter recommending discharge of Pte. R. Johnston: He is a constant source of trouble to his Platoon Sergeant, his comrades complain of his obscene language & low habits, and he makes little or no progress with his training. On being awarded a minor punishment....he broke out of camp & remained absent till nearly midnight. [4]

1916

  • Battalion situated at La Vicogne. Orders are received to march at 10am for Contay. Battalion arrives 3pm.[5]

1917

  • Battalion situated at 'Road Camp' involved in training.[6]
