Western Front
- Battle of Flanders begins, a desperate struggle for the coast lasting for some six weeks and including (a) Battle of the Yser, 16 October, seq. (b) Battle of Ypres, 19 October, seq.
- Paris heavily bombed.
- Cavalry fighting near Hazebrouck.
Eastern Front
- Poland: Germans take Sochaczew.
- Galicia: Russians forced to raise the siege of Przemsyl, which is reprovisioned from Cracow.
- Austrians recover Jaroslau.
