1914 (Friday)
- Thomas Smith Glasson (15430) enlists in Carlisle.
- Newspaper article Lonsdale Battalion - More Workington Recruits[1] is published.
- Lt-Col. Machell reports to Lord Lonsdale: "It is most kind of you to have ordered the football jerseys, and we shall be very pleased to wear your crest....we have had to evacuate the tents....as the water came through. However, they have got on well with flooring the loose boxes....Tomorrow our numbers should be 800, and I expect a big influx after the hirings. - ↑ Lieutenant Malley-Martin was awarded the Mlitary Cross. Citation reads: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He made a daring reconnaissance in daylight under heavy rifle and shell fire. The valuable information obtained by him had much to do with the success of the operation. In 1918 he was attached to the Royal Air Force, which was founded on 1 April 1918 with the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS).
